Foreword – Sir Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London

Culture is a city’s DNA. It’s the thing that binds us together – both in times of crisis and celebration. It’s what makes the daytime thrive and the night-time come alive.
Culture and the creative industries are vital to our cities’ success. That’s why it’s so important that the world’s greatest cities continue to share ideas and work together to promote the importance of culture around the globe.
Our cities face similar pressures – from creating good economic growth to improving the health and wellbeing of our citizens. These are big, shared challenges, which culture can help to address because it not only brings people together but creates jobs and new opportunities, sparking innovation and boosting tourism. In London, it’s a vital element of our economy, as well as being one of the things that make Londoners proud to be Londoners.
Culture doesn’t just reflect who we are; it shapes us. It has the power to inspire and help people reach their full potential. We know that children who get involved in music, the arts and culture do better at school and live happier, healthier, more fulfilling lives. We also know that it can help to tackle loneliness and forge stronger communities. That’s why it’s so important that we continue our work to unlock the potential of culture and ensure everyone can access it in every corner of our cities.
This fifth edition of the World Cities Culture Report captures bold, inspiring work led by cities across the globe, from linking culture and climate action to creating more space for the next generation of artists. Driven by data and case studies, it showcases creative ways to keep our cities thriving in the decades to come.
At a time when some are tempted to treat culture as a luxury, I’m prouder than ever to be the patron of the World Cities Culture Forum: a network that understands that culture is the foundation of our cities and works tirelessly to champion it for the benefit of everyone.
