Reviving Jakarta’s Traditional Folk Games: Heritage Practices for Future Generations

The purpose
Jakarta’s culture is interwoven with the vibrant traditions of the Betawi people, natives to Jakarta from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Among these, traditional folk games and sports stand out as beloved pastimes, uniting communities and celebrating Jakarta’s rich heritage. Games like Panjat Pinang (greased pole climbing) and Balap Karung (sack race) have endured through generations, fostering a strong sense of community among the city’s residents.
The Challenge
Yet, amidst the urban sprawl and technological advancements, the essence of these cherished games faces an uncertain future. Rapid urban development has encroached upon green spaces, once the playgrounds of these time-honored activities. Data from the Jakarta Environment Agency reveals a decline in green areas from 10.5% in 2004 to 8.5% in 2020.
Compounding these challenges is the waning familiarity with these traditions among Jakarta’s youth. Many children are not taught folk games within school curriculum and unaware of this cultural heritage.

The Solution
To address these concerns, the Department of Culture of the DKI Jakarta Province orchestrated a major event: the Traditional Folk Games and Sports Competition in 2023 at the Betawi Cultural Village Management Unit. This gathering convened 500 elementary and middle school students, showcasing traditional games like Tok Kadal (log racing) and Calasin (racing in clogs).
Ahead of the event, students and teachers received comprehensive guidance for interactive learning and workshops. Over two days, participants not only honed their skills but also imbibed the values of creativity, sportsmanship, and cultural stewardship.
The Impact
Following the event, the Department of Culture provided participating schools with teaching materials to support the students’ ongoing practice of traditional folk games and its associated wellbeing benefits. This initiative marks a crucial step towards preserving Jakarta’s sporting heritage for generations to come.
