Guangzhou Design Week: a global platform for design-led urban and cultural innovation
Project: Embedding design in public life, urban regeneration and international exchange

Founded in 2006, Guangzhou Design Week is one of Asia’s most comprehensive annual design events. Since 2020, its focus has shifted from industrial upgrading to embedding design in public life and urban regeneration. Through partnerships with over 30 countries and global events like Milan Design Week, it plays a key role in cultural diplomacy – positioning Guangzhou as a creative capital and model for cities integrating design into policy and international exchange.
From driving industrial upgrading to designing for people
Encompassing environmental art, product design, digital media, and AI, Guangzhou Design Week originally aimed to boost design-industry and brand collaborations. Through themed exhibitions, trade shows and roadshows across China, it has evolved into a strategic platform for city branding, cultural innovation, and international exchange. It was the first in the industry to propose to promote design through commercialisation, and in 2015 established the mission of “design driving industrial upgrading”.
Held every December, the event attracts designers, brands, city officials, cultural institutions, engineers and media from around the world. It combines exhibitions, award programmes, and research forums with deep engagement in Guangzhou’s urban and social fabric. As of 2024, the event reached more than one million professionals annually and has influenced over 10 million people in the design sector since its inception.
In 2020, the event shifted its focus to “Design for People’s Livelihood”. This approach reframes design not only as an industry driver but as a tool to enhance everyday life and public wellbeing. Guangzhou Design Week wants to become the source of contemporary living aesthetics, promoting design’s expansion from professional fields to mass consumer markets – developing material innovation and craftmanship that connects design to people’s homes, values, and aspirations.
Urban curator model and spatial innovation
Guangzhou Design Week now acts as a design laboratory for urban transformation. Through its “Urban Curator” model, the event collaborates with planners and local governments to integrate exhibitions and interventions directly into historic districts and community spaces. This fosters public participation in design, turning festivals into vehicles for placemaking and civic engagement.
Its “Park concept operation method” converts indoor and outdoor venues into interactive, walkable experiences – merging art, design, and local storytelling to strengthen cultural connection at the neighbourhood level. It also established a “Super Strategy Studio,” partnering with experienced cultural, commercial, and tourism planning teams to empower district renovation and improve the urban environment.
Driving global design exchange
Over twenty years, Guangzhou Design Week has become a major node in the global design ecosystem. The event maintains active collaborations with over 200 cities and 30 countries, forming a global network of cultural exchange and professional dialogue, and drives value growth of Chinese designer communities.
Guest country programmes, cross-border design showcases, and collaborations with Milan Design Week, Maison&Objet, and London Design Festival reinforce Guangzhou’s position as a creative capital with global relevance. These partnerships foster mutual learning among city governments, creative industries, and policy institutions. It directly and indirectly drives business cooperation in the design field, generating tremendous economic value, and has become a key cultural diplomacy platform.
