A New Era for Vienna’s City Museum
Project: Transforming the Wien Museum to become a modern, accessible and sustainable cultural landmark

The Wien Museum, originally opened in 1959, underwent a major renovation and expansion between 2020 and 2023, transforming it into a modern, accessible, and sustainable cultural landmark. Operated by the Museums of the City of Vienna and funded entirely by the City—with an annual subsidy of approximately EUR 27.6 million for all municipal museums—the project revitalised the museum while honouring its historic architectural design.
Architectural innovation while preserving a heritage building
The renovation was preceded by over a decade of public discussion, reflecting the museum’s central role in Vienna’s cultural life. The project faced several challenges: preserving the original 1959 building’s architectural integrity, addressing insufficient exhibition space, and integrating energy-efficient systems to meet sustainability goals.
Architectural innovation was key to overcoming these obstacles. Two new floors were added, featuring a striking “floating” concrete cube that increased space without compromising the historic structure. The upgrades included geothermal heating and cooling, solar panels, and high-performance insulation to reduce environmental impact. Accessibility and inclusivity were prioritised with redesigned entrances, public terraces, and diverse programming for a wide audience.

Enhancing pride and connecting visitors to Vienna’s past and present
Since reopening, the Wien Museum has become a model of success. Visitor numbers soared, with the one-millionth visitor welcomed just 18 months after reopening. In 2024—the first full year of operation—attendance was nearly five times higher than the annual average between 2005 and 2018.
The museum’s commitment to sustainability was formally recognised with the Austrian Eco-Label, highlighting its achievement in combining preservation, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
