Cultural districts

Jakarta’s popular cultural hubs include Taman Ismail Marzuki, an art compound where Jakarta Art Institute is located alongside theatres, cinemas, and other popular attractions, and Ancol Dream Park, a huge area for leisure and entertainment on the north coast, which includes an Art Market.

The Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art opened in November 2017. It’s the first museum in Indonesia to have a collection of modern and contemporary Indonesian and international art. The museum supports the wider artistic landscape in Indonesia through internships and training opportunities for young professionals, as well as partnerships with local schools to provide educational resources that help engage students with art. The museum was included in Time Magazine’s 2018 list of the World’s 100 Greatest Places 2018.

Digital nomadism

Digital nomadism has taken off in Jakarta following the Covid-19 pandemic, showcasing a distinct shift in traditional ways of working and travel within the city. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has highlighted digital nomadism as a key opportunity for growth in the city. This includes the transformation of Kepulauan Seribu, a chain of 110 islands north of Jakarta’s coast, into what is known as Digital Nomad Island. Several locations are being developed to support digital nomads through improved transport infrastructure and the creation of coworking spaces, internet cafes and accommodation specifically catered towards remote workers.
