Emerging Alternative Art Scene

A growing network of contemporary art hubs is revitalizing Jakarta’s art scene. Notable examples include the Komunitas Salihara gallery, which addresses social and political issues through performances, exhibitions, and discussions. Smaller progressive spaces like Dia.Lo.Gue Artspace and M Bloc Space are also gaining popularity among creative entrepreneurs and communities. Art collectives like “ruangrupa” promote social impact approaches to art and creativity.

Digital nomadism

‘Digital nomadism’ has been a key trend in Jakarta following the Covid-19 pandemic, showcasing a distinct shift in traditional ways of working and travel within the city.

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has highlighted digital nomadism as a key opportunity for growth in the city. This includes the transformation of Kepulauan Seribu, a chain of 110 islands north of Jakarta’s coast, into what is known as Digital Nomad Island. Several locations are being developed to support digital nomads through improved transport infrastructure and the creation of coworking spaces, internet cafes and accommodation specifically catered towards remote workers.

A booming technology sector

Jakarta is home to the largest ecosystem of tech startups in Indonesia. The number of start ups more than doubled from 173 in 2019 to over 400 in 2021 (Source: Tech in Asia). This growth underscores the city’s position as a leading centre for entrepreneurship and tech innovation in South East Asia.

To support the city’s creative entrepreneurs and Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs), the government has launched the ‘Jakpreneur’ initiative, a capacity building programme for small and medium enterprises in Jakarta.
