A lesson in conservation: heritage experts restore Jakarta’s treasured monument

Safeguarding the cultural value of the Dirgantara Statue

Dirgantara Statue, Jakarta.

The Purpose

The conservation of the Dirgantara Statue aims to safeguard its historical significance and cultural value.

Also known as the Gatot Kaca Monument, the bronze statue was commissioned by President Sukarno in 1964 to honor the Indonesian Air Force and early aviators who fought for independence. The statue, located above a busy motorway in Pancoran, South Jakarta, has accumulated dirt, grime and corrosive compounds from car pollutants since its last cleaning in 1970. By employing strategies to mitigate damage and decay, the City of Jakarta seeks to uphold the integrity of this cherished symbol of Indonesian aviation history.

The Challenge

The conservation work being carried out requires coordination with various agencies and careful consideration of weather conditions. The statue’s height introduces technical hurdles, exacerbated by adverse weather like rain and strong winds, which hinder conservation procedures such as air abrasion techniques.

The Solution

The conservation project prioritizes key aspects:

  1. Historical Significance: Recognizing and honoring the statue’s historical importance.
  1. Authenticity Preservation: Ensuring the statue remains true to its original form.
  1. Patina Maintenance: Protecting the natural patina (the thin layer of bronze that forms as a protection against the surrounding environment) as a testament to its age and character.
  1. Thorough Documentation: Documenting the statue’s condition pre- and post-conservation.
  1. Efficiency and Effectiveness: Executing conservation efforts with precision and efficacy.

The Impact

Conserving the Dirgantara Statue yields significant benefits for the city, including:

  • The preservation of cultural heritage: Conservation ensures the preservation of an important cultural heritage symbol. The Dirgantara Statue holds historical significance as a tribute to Indonesian aviators and represents the nation’s aspirations in the aerospace industry. Through conservation, future generations can continue to appreciate its cultural value.

  • The promotion of conservation practices: The conservation project for the Dirgantara Statue can serve as a model for future conservation efforts, promoting best practices in heritage conservation. It raises awareness about the importance of preserving cultural artifacts and encourages similar initiatives for other historical landmarks.

Overall, the conservation of the Dirgantara Statue brings about both tangible and intangible benefits, including fostering community pride, contributing to environmental stewardship and inspiring future conservation endeavors.
