Tourism is growing in Edinburgh and is an important contributor to its economy, providing over 34,800 jobs and generating £1.4 billion in visitor spend. Visitor numbers grew by 18% from 2010 to 2015 and visitor spend by 30% over the same period.

Visitor management is an increasing debating point in the city. Reports in the media over the summer of 2017 questioned Edinburgh’s capacity to cope with an increasing number of visitors. The City plans to introduce a ‘Tourist Tax’.

During the pandemic, ten out of eleven of Edinburgh’s major festivals successfully delivered their programming to audiences in a live or digital format.
