Developing new spaces for art and culture

Amsterdam is short of space, making it challenging for artists to find places to live and work. There are plans to develop new ways to make space temporarily available, including offering vacant land and buildings for cultural events – and extending the use of street space. Additionally, artists can apply to rent living or studio space directly from the city itself, helping with affordability.

Embracing Digital

There is increased interest in supporting digitally delivered cultural events. One example is DigitAL, which began as an emergency pandemic intervention to help organisations connect with audiences digitally. Now it continues to offer – funding and training for cultural professionals, funded by a public-private partnership with the City of Amsterdam.

Embracing culture in new districts

The City is developing a ‘reference standard’ for culture in its newer districts, including Noord, Nieuw-West and Zuidoost. It will state how many square metres of cultural space should be offered per capita.
