Can Bengalaru’s new design principals transform the future of the city?

Project: implementing the ‘World Design Protopolis’ principals

The Purpose
The purpose of the World Design Protopolis (WDP) in Bengaluru is to leverage design principles to enhance the city’s liveability across six thematic areas. These areas include Sustainable Bengaluru, Build Bengaluru, Creative Bengaluru, Enterprising Bengaluru, Safe and Healthy Bengaluru, and Future Now. The goal is to use design thinking to improve various aspects of the city, from sustainability and infrastructure to culture and technology.

The Challenge
The primary challenge faced by WDP was building a collaborative multi-stakeholder ecosystem. This involved bridging the gap between historically untrusting entities, such as public and private sectors, educators, professionals and the community. Overcoming the ‘Not Invented Here’ syndrome, where entities were hesitant to adopt external ideas, was a significant challenge.

The success of WDP in leveraging design principles is expected to serve as a blueprint for positive transformations

The Solution
To address these challenges, a three-tier governance mechanism was established, consisting of a Steering Committee and an Action Group Task Force. This structure was designed to ensure effective oversight, operational flexibility, and compliance. Additionally, the project received an initial funding injection of USD 3 million, with a commitment of an additional USD 20 million over the next five years to support resource delivery.

Their approach, rooted in deep listening and understanding, has helped them break away from past failures and challenge top-down decision-making. This approach has enabled them to overcome the challenges they faced in building a collaborative ecosystem.

The Impact
The impact of WDP and its collaborative approach can be seen in the Unboxing Bengaluru Festival, which serves as an early testament to the positive changes taking place within the city. Beyond this festival, the success of WDP in leveraging design principles is expected to serve as a blueprint for positive transformations, not only within Bengaluru but also in other regions facing similar challenges. It aims to improve the liveability and sustainability of the city while fostering innovation and collaboration across various sectors.
