New museums dedicated to architecture and design are rare. Yet Helsinki is making global headlines with the establishment of the Architecture and Design Museum Helsinki, uniting two iconic institutions – The Museum of Finnish Architecture and Design Museum Helsinki – into a single, future-facing cultural powerhouse.

Initiated in 2021 by the Finnish government and the City of Helsinki, the project is a cornerstone of Finland’s ambition to be a leading global design destination. The new museum will serve as a platform for education, participation, sustainability, and innovation, helping position Helsinki as a model for creative placemaking and sustainable cultural infrastructure.

A landmark museum for a design capital

To drive the project forward, the Foundation for the Finnish Museum of Architecture and Design was established in 2022, followed by the merger of the two legacy institutions in January 2024 under AD Museum Ltd. The museum is set to open its doors in 2030.

This unified institution is already shaping its identity, grounded in Nordic values of openness, sustainability, and social equity. With national and international responsibilities, it will support professionals, researchers, students, and the general public in engaging deeply with architecture and design as tools for building better societies.

An inclusive and dynamic cultural experience

The new museum is committed to offering a highly inclusive museum experience, catering to diverse audiences through programming that reflects many voices and communities. Exhibitions and public programmes will use experimentation, observation, and dialogue to explore architecture and design as living, evolving disciplines.

For professionals and students, the museum will act as a hub for critical debate and skill-building. For the broader public, it will offer multisensory exhibitions, hands-on workshops, and access to an unparalleled collection of Nordic design heritage.

A sustainable architectural icon on Helsinki’s waterfront

The museum will be built in Makasiiniranta, a developing waterfront area in Helsinki’s South Harbour. The site is flanked by national landmarks like the Presidential Palace and Helsinki Cathedral, in an area of national cultural and historical value.

An international architectural design competition, launched in April 2024, attracted over 600 entries and will conclude in autumn 2025. The selected design must meet ambitious goals for sustainable museum design, targeting climate resilience, carbon neutrality, and biodiversity-friendly construction – making the museum a global benchmark for sustainability in public architecture.

Transforming Helsinki’s cultural landscape

Set to open in 2030, the Architecture and Design Museum Helsinki will anchor a vibrant cultural district, integrating exhibition spaces, public engagement zones, and commercial amenities. More than a museum, it is a future-ready civic space that reflects Helsinki’s values and aspirations in architecture, sustainability, and inclusivity – setting a global standard for the next generation of design-led cultural infrastructure.
