A new Munch Museum opened on the Bjørvika harbour front in October 2021, housing the works of Edvard Munch and other artists in an environmentally friendly building. It is part of a redeveloped cultural quarter including the National Opera and an array of smaller venues.
In summer 2022, Tracy Emin’s nine metre tall bronze sculpture ‘The Mother’ was unveiled in front of the Munch Museum, overlooking the harbour.
The Deichman Library opened in 2020 on the Bjørvika harbour front, offering social, creative and new technology activities alongside traditional library services. Most recently the Future Library project has opened its Silent Room on the site, where participating authors’ texts will be held, unread, until 2114.
A new National Museum opened in June 2022 at the Aker Brygge harbour front featuring art, architecture and design. The building combines three existing institutions: the National Gallery, Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Decorative Art and Design.
Libraries continue to spread across the city with one in each district. Three new and refurbished libraries are planned in coming years, with a focus on the ‘Biblo’ concept, designed strictly for 10-15 year olds and filled with activities.
Three new ‘culture stations’ are planned – multi-functional spaces, designed to make skills development more accessible and increase self-expression in local communities.
