Why children’s culture is being integrated with educational and social services in Helsinki’s cultural development

Project: publishing the ‘Art and Culture Vision’ for Helsinki

The Purpose
Helsinki’s vision for art and culture in 2030 seeks to place art and culture at the heart of the city’s development and the well-being of its inhabitants.

The Challenge
This vision addresses the significant challenges brought about by the environmental crisis, demographic changes and the impact of technology, necessitating a reevaluation of traditional mindsets and practices.

The Culture Unit, in its new role, focuses on strengthening the position of children’s culture in Helsinki.

The Solution
To navigate this shifting landscape, the vision underscores the role of art as a means for Helsinki to understand itself, envision alternative futures, and forge pathways to progress. It also promotes dialogue among the diverse cultures of the city.

The Impact
While the vision has been warmly received by city decision-makers and has influenced the City Strategy 2021-2025, one of its key impacts is a renewed emphasis on children’s culture. The Culture Unit, in its new role, focuses on strengthening the position of children’s culture in Helsinki. It collaborates closely with educational, social and health services to ensure that art and culture are an integral part of children’s lives, contributing to their growth and development. In a broader sense, this approach recognises that art and culture can serve as powerful tools for the development of various areas in Helsinki, benefiting the entire city and fostering a sense of joy and hope in the lives of all its inhabitants.
