## Building a cultural legacy around the 2026 Youth Olympic Games

**The Purpose**

Dakar will host the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games (31 October–13 November), the first Olympic event ever to be awarded to the African continent. Building on its reputation as one of Africa’s leading cultural centres, the City wanted the Games to be more than a sporting event — an opportunity to weave artistic, educational and sporting life together and to leave a lasting cultural legacy for residents, particularly young people.

**The Challenge**

Turning a single sporting event into a nationwide cultural moment, while creating public space and infrastructure that would outlast the Games themselves.

**The Solution**

The Games organising committee launched _L’Esprit de Dakar 2026_ (The Spirit of Dakar 2026), a cultural heritage label unifying artistic, educational and sporting initiatives across the country. Open to artists, associations, schools and local authorities, the label is modelled on the cultural programmes of the Buenos Aires 2018 and Paris 2024 Olympics. Alongside it, the _Plan de Célébration des Jeux Olympiques de la Jeunesse_ (Youth Olympic Games Celebration Plan) has folded traditional Senegalese heritage practices into the Games’ celebration, including [pirogue regattas held in Ngor](https://presoffministry.gov.mm/en/news/39381).

The City has paired this cultural programming with new public infrastructure. The Place des Cultures Urbaines (Urban Cultures Square), developed in the working-class neighbourhood of Grand Yoff, is the clearest example: largely funded by the City of Dakar and managed jointly with the Maison des Cultures Urbaines, the national board sports federation and international partners, it houses a public skatepark exceeding 1,000 m² built to international standards. The square gives young residents a safe space to practice skateboarding, rollerblading, BMX/VTC and breaking, while also hosting concerts, fashion shows, theatre performances and open-air exhibitions — directly ahead of the City’s Olympic debut.

**The Impact**

By linking the Games to a national cultural label, a heritage celebration plan and new permanent public space for youth culture and sport, Dakar is using its Olympic moment to embed culture in urban life beyond the two weeks of competition. The model draws on precedents set by Buenos Aires 2018 and Paris 2024, adapting them to celebrate Senegalese heritage and to give young Dakarois lasting cultural and recreational infrastructure.
